Program Manager

Within business transformation a Program Manager’s main remit is to devise the strategy for the program of work, often working at the executive level within the business.  Importantly they are accountable for providing leadership, the management, coordination and direction to the teams delivering the projects and liaising closely with functional Project Managers and stakeholders to plan, prioritise and resource the program of work.


Typically, a Program Manager is someone highly experienced within business transformation, and juggling multiple projects and the challenges that come with that. They may have to:


  • Manage project streams to ensure consistency is established, and managed across the program
  • Prepare and present business cases to the executive team
  • Act as the bridge between the business units, technology and the executive team
  • Coordinate and / or manage cross functional teams to ensure the approved program business objectives are achieved on time and within budget
  • Develop, implement and monitor a program level plan of activities and deliverables
  • Juggle the often competing needs of project streams in order to prioritise effectively the use of resources that are available
  • Devise and implement changes to realise the business benefits
  • Able to develop and deliver program level communications throughout the program lifecycle


Businesses of different sizes, or transformations of different sizes, may have different structures in place. Larger transformations may have roles that sit above the Program Manager, or instead of, such as Program Lead or Program Director.
